Abstract
689,927. Jointing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SOWTER, A. B. June 11, 1951 [Oct. 31, 1950], No. 26571/50. Class 83 (iv). In a method of cold welding two members in a butt joint, each member is held in a clamp so that its end projects therefrom but insufficiently to allow lateral distortion, and the two members are forced together so that the material of both members flows out laterally. For butt welding two “ inch diameter aluminium rods 14, 15, each rod has the end to be welded trued and cleaned by scratch brushing. The rod is then clamped in a two-part tool member having a bore of 0.242 inch diameter with a chamfer at the end, the rod projecting from the bore by about <SP>3</SP>/ 16 inch. The two tool members are then placed in a press and forced together by a load of about four tons so that the metal of the rods is forced out as shown in Fig. 4 to form a flash 16 about <SP>3</SP>/ 32 inch thick and ¢ inch diameter. The flash may afterwards be trimmed off. In a modified form of tool, Fig. 6, the bore 19 leads into a welding shoulder or face 23 surrounded by an annular recess 22, the main face of the tool serving as a stop face to prevent the welding flash being compressed too much and so causing a back flow of metal along the axis of the rods. The tool, as designed for butt welding wires of 0.059 inch diameter has the recess 0.015 inch deep and of “ inch diameter and the shoulder 23 forming the welding face is 0.006 inch below the face 21 and <SP>3</SP>/ 32 inch in diameter. The method may be used for cold butt welding rods of different metals, e.g. aluminium and copper and rods of different diameters, in which case the larger diameter rod may be tapered at the end.
