[Also in Group XXVIII] In a drill-pipe joint comprising a tool-joint member 4 having a reduced end 6 and wherein one end of a pipe 2 is held between a collar 9 and the end 6, the member 4, pipe 2 and collar 9 are secured by a weld 14. The connection between two sections 1 and 2 of the drill pipe includes a pin member 3 and the member 4, which members are secured together by a tapered thread 5, the member 4 incorporating an inclined shoulder 8. The end 11 of the internally flared collar 9 and the end 12 of the pipe 2 have an opposite inclination to that of the shoulder 8 thus providing a trough for the annular weld 14 which may be formed by electrodes 15 and 16, the former being submerged in flux 14a inserted in the trough. The conicity of the collar 9 and end 6 differ slightly. The end 2a of the pipe 2 is flared after the collar 9 has been placed in the pipe and the tapered end 6 is either manually inserted or force fitted therein or the pipe may be shrunk on the end 6; the pipe end 2a is workhardened. The extremities 11 and 12 are machined after the parts have been assembled to facilitate welding which latter is effected either by rotating the electrode 15 or the joint.
