Abstract
722,070. Uniting by fusion. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., C. A. Oct. 2, 1952, No. 24681/52. Class 83 (4). In electric arc fusion welding steel parts from one side only, a backing ring or strip of molybdenum is used. The backing may be a flat molybdenum strip flush with the workpieces or a curved molybdenum strip i, Fig. 3. For welding large pieces a composite backing formed of a base material, which may be integral with one of the workpieces, faced, e.g. by spraying with molybdenum, is used. In one embodiment of a composite backing a molybdenum strip j, Fig. 4, on a base k is flush with workpieces b, c. In further composite backing embodiments the molybdenum strip may be below the surface of the base material or curved as in Fig. 3, or formed with a depression as in Fig. 9.
