[Class 40 (iv)] A microphone includes a diaphragm 11 of thermoplastic material having a thickness in the range 0.0001 to 0.002 inch and carrying a coil 10 filling a circular air gap in the magnet system 1 subject to manufacturing clearances of about 0.005 inch, openings 12 and 6 being provided in the magnet system to admit free air behind the stiff central portion of the diaphragm and also behind a flexible peripheral portion, the latter being integral with the stiff centre portion. The diaphragm may be formed of polyvinyl-formal, cellulose acetate or nylon. Specification 625,014 is referred to.
