Abstract
623,307. Two-part couplings combined with switches. LEWIS, J. H. W. April 28, 1947, No. 11347. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Groups XI and XXXVII] In a plug-and-socket connector for, e.g. a cordless electric iron 1 having flat plugs 2, 3, 4, contacting flat blade sockets 10, 11, 12, located in a casing 6 on a stand 5, the negative socket 11, Fig. 4, comprises two blades 15, 16, the latter one being bent downwardly and carrying at its end one contact 18 of a switch so that on insertion of the plug 3, the consequent flexing of the strip 16 causes contact 18 to engage the other switch contact 19 and complete the heating circuit of the iron. The sockets 10, 12 are made longer than socket 11 so that they are engaged by the pins 2, 3 before the switch is closed when the parts of the coupling are brought together or so that the circuit is broken before the parts are disengaged. The lead to the positive socket 10 may include a socket 20<SP>1</SP> for an indicator lamp connected in shunt with a low resistance 24. The switch may be provided on the appropriate plug, which may be shorter for the purpose set forth.
