Abstract

1,120,440. Charging and discharging batteries; two-part couplings. STERN FRERES S.A. 28 Dec., 1965 [29 Jan., 1965], No. 54984/65. Headings H2E and H2H. Electrical apparatus suitable for powering portable D.C. appliances such as torches or electric razors comprises a plastics casing 1 housing a rechargeable battery 2, rectifier 3, resistor 4 and capacitor 5, the charging circuit comprising the last mentioned three members being energizable from a mains supply socket through plug pins 13 mounted on an end 12 of the casing 1. This end 12 also carries a central contact socket 17 and two diametrically-opposed contact sockets 20, Fig. 2 (not shown), and is engaged by a plastics cap 14 when the apparatus is used as a current source, this cap having recesses 15 to receive the pins 13, a contact pin 16 to engage the socket 17, and a pair of contact pins 21 which respectively engage the sockets 20 and are connected by a bridging strip 22. Engagement of members 1, 14 connects a terminal 10 to one pole of the battery (through members 20, 21, 22) and a contact surface 16a to the other battery pole (through members 16, 17), the contacts 10, 16a thus forming the source terminals. When charging, the contacts 10, 17 are respectively isolated and physically inaccessible. Members 1, 14 may be of a size and shape suitable to replace a dry cell or cells in a portable appliance.
