Abstract

An alkali metal salt of an alkyl ester of a -formylphenaceturic acid is prepared by reacting an alkyl ester of phenaceturic acid, an alkyl formate and an alkali metal alkoxide in an inert, anhydrous, organic solvent, e.g. benzene or ether. The reaction may be effected at a temperature not exceeding about 50 DEG C. The free ester of a -formylphenaceturic acid is obtained by treating the alkali metal salt with an acid. Alkali metal alkoxides may be sodium alkoxides, e.g. sodium methoxide or ethoxide. Suitable alkyl formates are methyl or ethyl formate. In examples, the preparation of methyl- and ethyl-a -formylphenaceturate and their sodium salts is described.
