Abstract
Vitamin A is obtained by reacting an alkyl ester of vitamin A acid containing up to five carbon atoms in the alkyl group, e.g. the methyl or ethyl ester, with lithium aluminium hydride under substantially anhydrous or oxygen-free conditions, hydrolysing the resulting product and extracting the aqueous mass with a solvent for vitamin A. Purification of the vitamin A solution may be effected over weakly activated alumina. Detailed examples are given.
