Abstract
621,999. Parachute flares. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. March 4, 1947, No. 6097. [Class 9 (ii)] A flare device to be released from aircraft comprises an outer casing 1 closed forwardly by a detachable cap 1a and rearwardly by a plug 2 containing an explosive charge 4 actuated by a delay fuze 6 to eject an inner casing 9. Furthermore, the inner casing, which is closed by two caps 24, is divided by a plug 12 into two compartments, each containing a flare candle with an attached parachute 21, the flare compositions 18 being adjacent to explosive charges 14 in the plug 12, these charges 14 ejecting and igniting the flares when ignited by a delay fuze 10 leading from the explosive charge in the base plug 2. The fuze 10 leads to a length of quickmatch in an axial passage 13 so that the charges 14 are ignited simultaneously. The delay fuze 6 is ignited by a pull on the cord of a friction igniter 7 after removal of a screw cap 8. Two strips of adhesive tape 25 are bound round the inner casing 9 to space it from the outer casing 1,-a groove being cut in one strip to provide a passage for the fuze 10. Specification 558,829 is referred to.
