Abstract

1,079,098. Illuminating projectiles. BOFORS A.B. April 20, 1966 [April 20, 1965], No. 17383/66. Heading F3A. A mortar shell includes a flare 1 connected by a closed base 3 and eyelet 4 to a parachute in a tail section 19, 20. The flare is housed in an intermediate section 11 defining the calibre and of larger diameter than a nose section 14 and the tail section. The section 11 has a flange 10 which retains the nose and a flange 12 retaining the tail section. The shell is dropped nose first into a mortar so that a percussion cap 15 ignites a propellant charge 16 whereof the gases issuing from nozzles 17 eject the shell which rights itself in flight. A delay composition and priming charge 18 ignite the flare. This forces open the flange 12 and the flare is ejected. The separable tail portions 19, 20 which are held by a releasable hinge (22), Fig. 4 (not shown), fall away. The tail is made light so that the disposition of the C.G. and flight stability are improved. A portable mortar for the shell comprises a mortar tube (25), Fig. 2 (not shown) hinged to a box (24) and supported by a releasable strut (27, 28).
