Abstract
580,539. Marine flares, signals, &c. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. Nov. 12, 1943, No., 18843. [Class 9 (ii)] A flare or like device for use at sea comprises a buoyancy chamber, a rocket and a head, secured to the rocket, containing a flare or like candle. The rocket 17 is housed in a casing 15, to which is fixed the buoyancy chamber 18. The rocket head 19 contains a smoke or flare candle or illuminating stars ; a parachute may be used with the candle. A disc 20, spacer 21 and plug 22 seal the top of the casing and are shot out by the rocket on firing. The lower end of the casing 15 is sealed by a plug 6 having charge-containing recesses 5, 9 and an annular recess 7 for a delay fuze 8. To use the device, a safety cap 1 is unscrewed, a wire 2 on a friction igniter 3 is pulled and the whole thrown into the sea. The actuation of the friction igniter ignites the charge in the chamber 5, held in position by paper 5a, which charge fires the fuze 8 leading to the charge in the recess 9. This charge, which on ignition ejects the rocket from its casing, is held in position by a paper disc 10 and wooden disc 12 with a central aperture 11. The delay fuze 8 allows the apparatus to attain a vertical position in the water before the rocket is fired. The rocket has a sliding tail 14 described in Specification 573,480.
