Abstract
580,866. Marine flares; rocket dischargers. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. April 5, 1944, No. 6314. [Class 9 (ii)] A marine-flare or rocket-discharging device, to be dropped into the sea from an aircraft and thereafter to rise to the surface and be ignited or discharged, as described in Specification 579,982, has the igniting means so arranged that the delay fuze of the flare igniter or rocketexpulsion charge is ignited before the charge which separates the inner container from the outer casing. The rocket or flare 1 is supported by a ring 7 in a casing 2 provided with a buoyancy chamber 3, and these are lightly secured at 5 within an outer casing 4'having a weighted base 6. Within ring 7 is a bobbin 9 around which is wound a delay fuze 10, one end of which terminates in a powder charge 11 and the other end in a powder charge 12 in a plate 8 screwed to ring 7. A plate 13, also fixed in.casing 2, is separated from plate 8 by two cardboard discs 22 and by a disc 14 of primed cambric, connected centrally by quickmatch 15 to the charge 12 and non-centrally by quickmatch 20 to a charge 19 which, when exploded, separates the casing 4 from the casing 2 and buoyancy chamber. When the assembly falls into the water, a contact fuze 21 is actuated and ignites the cambric disc 14 and quickmatch 15, and therethrough the charge 12, ignition fuze 10 and the charge 11 by which the rocket 1 is ignited and expelled. The fuze 10 is thus ignited before the quickmatch 20 ignites the separating charge 19, permitting the casing 2 and contents to rise to the surface. In the case of a flare, the charge 11 is omitted and the fuze 10 is extended to the top of the flare container 1.
