Abstract

620,328. Gravity-feed lubricators. FAIRFIELD SHIPBUILDING & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and DAVIS, A. W. Dec. 20, 1946, No. 37470. [Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] The turbine and gearing bearings 16 and hydraulic couplings 6, 7 of a marine reversing and reduction gearing of the kind described in Specification 619,866, [Group XXIV], are fed by a gravity tank 22 supplied from a lubricating pump 19 which is driven, directly or through toothed or chain gearing 20, from the astern driving pinion 2 and serves during propulsion by the ahead driving pinion 1 to supply a restraining torque to the pinion 2 to maintain its teeth in continuous engagement with the driving surfaces of the teeth of the driven gear 3. The pump 19 may operate during ahead and astern propulsion or during ahead propulsion only. Oil drains from the bearings 16 and couplings 6, 7 to a low-level tank 24. A booster pump 26 actuated by an electric motor 27 controlled by a float switch 29 is in parallel with the pump 19 and is switched on and off when the oil level in the tank 24 rises and falls beyond predetermined limits. According to the Provisional Specification, the booster pump may be controlled by the oil level in the gravity tank, and more than one pump may be driven from the astern driving pinion.
