Abstract
1,120,556. Vehicle power units. BORG-WARNER Ltd. 7 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 26044/66. Heading B7H. An automotive transmission arrangement comprises an engine mounted inboard of the wheels which it is adapted to drive, a torque converter 13 connected directly to the drive shaft 12 of the engine and disposed between the engine and a differential, automatic transmission gearing 19 mounted coaxially with the torque converter 13 outboard of the differential, the pinion 26 of the differential being driven by a shaft 23 which is parallel to the axis of the gearing 19 and driven by the output shaft 20 of the gearing 19 through gears 21, 22 mounted outboard of the gearing 19.\The axis of the shaft 23 is preferably offset below and to one side of the axis of the gearing 19. The arrangement is suitable for driving either the front or rear wheels of a vehicle. A governor 24 on the shaft 20 is connected to hydraulic valve gear 28 for controlling the gearing 19 and the same oil is supplied by a pump 17 to the transmission valve gear 28 and for lubricating the differential and gearing 19, 21, 22.
