Abstract

890,482. Manoeuvring ships. TRANSPORT EQUIPMENT (THORNYCROFT) Ltd. June 22, 1960 [Aug. 10, 1959], No. 27245/59. Class 114. [Also in Group XXXIV] A ship's propelling and steering means comprises a hollow rudder 1, a propeller shaft 3 mounted therein, a vertical drive shaft 9, passing through the rudder post 1#, a right angled gear drive 8, 8a on the shafts 3, 9, and a second right angled gear drive 12, 12a, the latter being driven by a prime mover, e.g., a gas turbine connected to a shaft 14, and a centrifugal clutch 14e. The gears and bearings are lubricated by a fixed displacement pump 20 driven from the bevel 12a by a second bevel 20b, which supplies oil from a reservoir, and a second pump 25 which discharges the lubricants back to the reservoir. The propeller 4 may be of the hydraulically actuated, variable pitch fully feathering type as disclosed in Specification 854,786.
