Abstract

1,221,201. Contra-rotating propeller drive. STONE MANGANESE MARINE Ltd. 31 July, 1969 [3 May, 1968], No. 15998/68. Heading B7V. In a marine vessel, contra-rotating propellers 4 and 5 are driven by concentric shafts 10 and 11, the outboard end 14 of the inner shaft 11 being supported by a bearing 15 in the rudder post 6, or the stern frame structure adjacent the rudder, and the inboard end by journal bearings 34 and thrust bearing 35 in gear-box assembly 12, no bearings being provided between the inner and outer shafts. Clearance 17 between the shafts is sealed by glands 29. The outer shaft 10 is supported by a stern frame bearing 19, gearbox journals 25 and thrust bearing 27. The engine output shaft 38 drives inner shaft 11 through gears 32, 31, and outer shaft 10 through gears 32, 39, transfer shaft 40 and gears 24, 23. Alternatively, shafts 10 and 11 may be driven by separate engine output shafts.
