617,781. Sand-blasting. LINDMARK, J. G, April 26, 1946, No. 12652. [Class 60] In a sand-blasting machine for preparing lithographic or other printing plates or rubber sheets used for offset printing, the plates are clamped around rotary drum and the blast is applied through one or more nozzles which traverse the length of the drum. A printing plate 12 is clamped by bars 13 to a drum 11 which is driven from a motor 15. A cylinder 17 is provided with a longitudinal slot 18 in which moves a holder 23 carrying a sand-blast nozzle 19 which is axially adjustable in the holder. The nozzle is made to traverse the drum 11 by a screw spindle 20 driven by a motor 24, adjustable abutments 26 serving to reverse the direction of travel of the nozzle. The cylinder 17 is capable of angular adjustment to obtain a desired angle of impact of the blast with the surface of the drum 11. The slot 18 may be closed by an elastic seal consisting of two bands of flexible steel, rubber or the like. A suction exhaust is applied to the machine at outlet 28. A collecting trough 29 is provided for the sand which is discharged through a side opening by means of a worm 30; a protecting mesh 35 prevents foreign bodies from falling into the trough 29. Sawdust may be used in place of sand, the jet may be of nitrogen or other non-oxydizing gas and the work may be moistened during blasting.
