Abstract
620,515. Sand-blast. AMERICAN FOUNDRY EQUIPMENT CO. Oct. 3, 1946, No. 29492. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1945. [Class 60] Sand-blast apparatus for cleaning skelp strip preparatory to welding into pipe comprises a cabinet having a longitudinal rail over which the skelp slides and removable sand-blast units located under the skelp strip for cleaning the margins of the undersurface of the strip. As shown in Fig. 3, the cabinet, which has a clapboard lining 25 of removable plates, has a rail or skid 40 and adjustable side-guides 31 for supporting the skelp strip 10; the entrance and exit openings are sealed by rubber curtains 33 and a vestibule 18 at the exit has airblast nozzles 39 to remove loose abrasive from the surface of the strip. Each sandblast unit, which has a protecting shroud 62, comprises a frame 57 having wheels 58 which run on tracks supported by I-beams; the frame carries an electric motor 60 which drives a blast wheel 14, 15, 16 or 17, fed with abrasive by a flexible hose 68 leading from a hopper 71. The sand-blast units are arranged in pairs as shown in Fig. 1, each pair cleaning opposite margins of the strip, and are removable along the tracks in directions as indicated by the arrows A, B, C, D. A service door is provided one opposite each blast unit and each unit is separately adjustable transversely of the cabinet by a screw mechanism: the units are secured in position by clamps 80 mounted on eccentric cams 81.
