Class 60 The centre 1 of a tailstock for a grinding machine is mounted on a carrier 3 which can be adjusted along the length of the tailstock and set in any adjusted position. The centre is secured to a block 2 adjustably clamped by a bolt 5 to the carrier 3 which is in turn adjustably clamped by bolts 7 and a removable rib 6 to a slide 9. mounted in the body 4 on balls 22 arranged in longitudinal alignment in holder plates 23. Workpieces of different length are dealt with by adjusting the carrier 3 along the slide 9 or by displacing the tailstock as a whole while withdrawal of the centre to enable workpieces to be removed is effected by movement of the slide 9. This latter movement may be produced by a handle mounted on the squared end of a spindle 13 fitted with an eccentric pin 12 to engage a groove 11 in the slide or by admitting pressure fluid from a flexible hose to a cylindrical chamber containing a spring- loaded plunger 10 fixed to the body 4 by a dowel pin 36. Dust covers 24 and 25 are carried by the slide 9.
