Class 83 (3) A control tool and work steady for a lathe &c. comprises means, operating automatically as the steady is traversed, to regulate the radial setting of the steady to conform to the radial dimension of the work where it is engaged by the steady. The steady rollers 2, 3 contact a workpiece W to support it against the thrust of a tool 1. The rollers are secured to the ends of fluid pressure, preferably liquid, cylinder-andram devices 13, 14 respectively, carried on a support 4 secured to the saddle carrying the tool 1. A feeler 5 moving in guideways 7 intermediate the steadies is spring-pressed to engage the work- and carries a cam block 9. The extensions 10, of spring-pressed valve members 11 bear against the inclined faces of the cam block so that the valve members are moved as the feeler follows the shape of the work. The valve members control the entry and escape of pressure fluid to and from the alternate ends of the ram cylinder through, the flexible pipes 17, 18. The outer ends of the rams are connected by links and brackets 27, 28 to the valve housings which are slidable in guides at the sides of the ram cylinders. The combined movement of valve member and ram under the feeler control, changes the position of the steady rollers so that they continue to support the work despite changes in its longitudinal contour. The' feeler may engage a pattern instead of directly contacting the work as described above. The steady and the cutting tool may both be mounted on the same traversing slide.
