[Class 83 (iv)] A lathe or like machine tool has a headstock and tailstock mounted on the side of a bed adapted to carry a slide having a projecting arm which supports a flamecutting burner for rough turning the work. Side pillars 10, 11 support a pair of parallel beams 12, 13 carrying a bed comprising side brackets 14, 15 connected by guide rods 17. The headstock 18 and tailstock 22 project laterally of the bars 12, 13 and the former is driven by an electric motor 20 through worm gearing 21. The tailstock carries a centre 68 which can move back against a spring 71 as the work expands. The main slide which comprises side plates 29 connected by a web 33 is guided in the bars 17 by lugs 30 and is traversed by a screw 16 driven through gearing 26, 27 from an independent electric motor 25. The slide may be moved by hand through a spindle 40 mounted in the slide and carrying a worm engaging the screw. For the normal feed the screw is engaged by a half-nut by operating an arm 37. A cross-slide 32 is moved on bars 31 of the main slide by a screw 42 and carries an arm 45, 46 fitted with a flame-cutting burner 47 fed through flexible tubes 48, 49 connected to controlling valve box 52. The burner 47 is secured to an internallyscrewed non-rotary sleeve 53 mounted in an axially adjustable sleeve 54 and moved axially by a screw 57 rotated by a hand-wheel 60. For profile turning a templet 62 secured to the bed is engaged by a pointer on an arm 64 secured to the cross slide which is manipulated so that the pointer follows the template as the main slide moves the burner along the work.
