Abstract

753,262. Portable turning apparatus. LODGE, V. A., and BISHOP, D. P. April 15, 1954, No. 11109/54. Class 83 (3). A portable tool for machining work carried by a driven axle of a motor-vehicle comprises a tool bar, clamping means for detachably securing the bar to the vehicle in a position substantially parallel to the driven axle, a toolholder, and means for feeding and guiding the tool holder for movement parallel to and perpendicular to the tool bar. As applied to truing the brake-drums of a motor vehicle, the drum 20 is reversed on the hub and the tool bar 10 is secured by adjustable brackets 15 to the brake backing-plates 11 of the axle 24. A block 30 on one end of the tool bar slidably supports a pair of guide-rods 31 secured to a carrier 32. The latter slidably supports a turning-tool 35 and its holder. Adjustment of the tool parallel and at right angles to the axle is effected by hand wheels 38, 34 respectively, operating through screw-and-nut mechanism. Adaptors or chucks can be mounted on the hub 21 to enable articles other than brake drums to be turned.
