[Class 60] A device for rotating a work-piece in a grinding-machine or other machine tool wherein the rotation is produced by longitudinal movement of the work - carriage, comprises a wheel, rolled upon a stationary member, and coupled to a work-holder mounted on the carriage. As shown in Fig. 1, the workcarriage 3 slides on a guide 1 on a frame 2 and in a part 4 of the carriage are mounted engaging bevel wheels 5, 6, the wheel 5 being secured to a hollow shaft to which the workpiece 7, shown as a milling-cutter, can be secured by a knob 8, a scale disc 9 serving for indexing the work. The wheel 6 is secured to a shaft 10, which has thereon a disc wheel 17 engaging a spring-pressed bar 12 carried by a stirrup 13 adjustably secured to the frame 2 by a slot and a screw 14 ; longitudinal movement of the carriage causes rotation of the work to an extent determined by the diameter of the wheel 17, which is interchangeable. In order to reverse the rotation of the work, the stirrup is moved and the bar is reversed so as to engage the wheel 17 on the other side of its axis. In a modification, a steel band is wrapped round the wheel in place of the use of the bar. A further modification employs a disc wheel on the work-holding shaft engaged by a steel band led round guide rollers - the carriage and secured at its ends to the frame. In both forms employing a band, this may be fixed at one end and adjustable, to tension the band, at its other end. In order to treat conical work-pieces, the work-holding part 4 is angularly adjustable on the carriage 3.
