Abstract

523,086. Grinding profiled work-pieces. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and SPURLING, B. C. Dec. 24, 1938, No. 37569. [Class 60] A machine for grinding irregular profiles comprises a grinding-wheel 10 rotating in a plane at right angles to the plane of universal movement of the work carriage 13 which carries adjustable holders for a work-piece engageable with the grinding-wheel and a templet engageable with a fixed abutment. The carriage is mounted on ball bearings 14 for universal movement on the bed 12 and carries compound slides 20, 17 the upper member 17 to which the templet 16 is secured by a screw 18 being adjusted by a micrometer screw 21 and the compound assembly being adjusted axially of the grinding-wheel by screws 25 threaded into vertical portions 26 of the carriage. A worksupporting bar 27 of square section has cylindrical end portions running in tapered bearing- sleeves 28 in the parts 26. The bar 27 is formed with a' rear extension 129 provided with upstanding lugs 30, 44. The extension is also fitted with a semi-cylindrical cradle carrying the lower work-holding member 32 which is of complementary arcuate form and is angularly adjustable on the cradle and secured thereto by a screw 35. An upper member 33 is slidably adjustable on the member 32 to and from the grinding-wheel and is clamped by a screw. The front of the member 33 is cut away at 34 in conformity with the shape of the work-piece 38 which is secured by a screw 41 on a pivoted clamping-lever 39 actuated by a hand-operated toggle lever 42 pivoted in the lugs 44. The work-holder may be angularly adjusted in the cradle to provide any required relief to the edge of the work. The work-holder may also be adjusted about the axis of bar 27 being clamped after adjustment by a wheel 57. The carriage is moved by hand, or mechanically, to engage the templet with a stationary abutment rod 47 having the same curvature as the edge of the work. The grinding-wheel is trued by a diamond 51 mounted to swing about the axis of abutment 47. The diamond is set by placing the member 48 over a long spindle of the same size as the abutment 47 and adjusting the diamond by a screw 52 to contact this spindle When the trueing attachment is placed on the machine, Fig. 7, the wheel will thus be trued to a profile having the same curvature as the abutment 47.
