Abstract
A method of counteracting the deleterious effect of lead in cast iron produced from metal contaminated with lead in which the molten metal is treated with an alkali metal nitrate or a mixture of an alkali metal nitrate and an alkali metal carbonate. When a mixture is used it preferably contains 30-80 per cent of the nitrate and 20-70 per cent of anhydrous carbonate. Preferably 0.25-4 per cent of mixture, based on the weight of metal treated, is used. The mixture may be added to molten metal in a ladle and after the reaction, the ladle is skimmed and an innoculant is introduced into the metal which is then cast. The treatment of austenitic nickel cast iron is referred to, in particular cast iron containing 12.0-17.5 per cent Ni, 5.0-7.5 per cent Cu, 1.25-6.0 per cent Cr together with carbon, silicon and manganese and small quantities of lead.
