Abstract

613,369. Pipe joints. BROWN, T. W. F., and PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. June 19, 1946, No. 18381. [Class 99 (i)] A yielding pipe joint which permits relative lateral movement due to the expansion of two pipes, such as a pipe a carrying high temperature fluid and a pipe b rigid with an engine body or casing, comprises two flanges c, d, attached to the respective pipes and maintained in abutment by a series of springs and plungers carried by brackets e, attached to the flange d, a groove j being provided in the flange c for the introduction of graphite lubricant to the abutting surfaces so as to facilitate the movement. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement when compression springs g are used to actuate plungers f ; the tension of the springs may be adjusted by means of screwed sleeves h. In the modification shown 'in Fig. 4, tension springs k are used, these being anchored at their lower ends to the brackets and at their other ends to a yoke member m carrying adjustment screws n bearing upon the ends of the plungers f. The invention is described as applied to rectangular section pipes. It may be modified for dealing with relative torsional movement of circular pipes by using annular flanges and sectorial brackets provided with abutment surfaces to prevent lateral movement whilst permitting torsional movement. An arrangement can also be used for amplifying the force exerted by the springs.
