Abstract
611,447. Centrifugal &c., fans &c. TRIGGS, W. W. (Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, & Cie.). April 30, 1946, No. 12953. [Class 110 (i)] A combined axial flow and centrifugal compressor for supercharging aircraft engines is characterised in that the axial flow lowpressure part 9 of the compressor is driven at a speed different from that of the centrifugal part 4 through the medium of speed-reducing gear which enables the axial flow part 9 to be declutched when required. When the axial flow part 9 is stopped the suction of the centrifugal part 4 takes place both through the axial flow part and through ports 23 provided with closing means 24. The combined compressor is driven from the gear 12 fixed to the centrifugal compressor shaft 3, the axial flow part being driven through the splined shaft 7 and gears 16, 18. When gear 18 is fixed relative to the casing by means of clutch 20 the cage 17 rotates and drives the shaft of the axial flow compressor to which it is secured.
