672,956. Gas turbine plant. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. July 6, 1950 [Aug. 11, 1949], No. 20888/49. Class 110(iii) [Also in Group XIII] A gas turbine unit comprises a centrifugal compressor 12 which delivers compressed air to a combustion chamber 24. A reversing flow volute chamber 28 connects the combustion chamber with an axial-flow turbine arranged co-axially with the compressor. The turbine comprises independent rotors respectively driving the compressor and an output shaft reduction gearing 37-41, positioned between the turbine and the compressor but to one side of the drive connection to the latter. The turbine exhausts into a volute chamber 45, having a twin outlet 46. The reduction gearing is mounted in a casing 49 which has an extension 50 for the shaft 37. Auxiliaries such as a governor, fuel or oil pump 51 are mounted about the casing 49 and are driven through gearing 52. A starting motor 53 is disposed at right-angles to the end of the turbine-compressor shaft 34. In a modification, a heat-exchanger is positioned between the compressor and the combustion chamber. Again, the plant may comprise two diametrically opposed combustion chambers, two heat-exchangers, a single-stage compressor and a single exhaust pipe.
