611,418. Gasifying unmixed coal. DEMART, P. Dec. 21, 1945, Nos. 34735 (Convention date, July 13, 1944), 34736 and 34737 (Convention dates, Nov. 21, 1944). [Class 55(ii)] In an underground gasification installation having gas discharge piping 4 within the combustion air passages 2, 3, a water supply conduit 21 and a steam discharge conduit 22 within the piping leading from a generating coil 36, a steam injector 44 connected to conduit 22 by way of a valve opening. at predetermined pressure discharges steam into the head gallery 32 of the panel under gasification. The injector may operate in synchronism with the phases of inversion of flow through the air and gas piping. In an example fan 47 delivers air, injector 44 steam, and fan 19 draws off gas for 20 seconds, then both fans extract gas and no steam is injected for 20 seconds, then for a final period in the cycle both fans deliver air and the injector steam. Levers which operate reversible blades of the fans or reverse their motors may be influencd by a pair of electromagnets alternately actuated by a timing device with adjustable contacts. A contact controlling the injector is also affected by one of the levers.
