Abstract
611,066. Pipe couplings. WURZBURGER, P. D. Dec. 12, 1945, No. 33674. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe coupling, of the type described in Specification 342,539, in which a ring R is fitted over a pipe T and the leading edge 23 of the ring is adapted to be contracted by forcing the ring into the conical mouth of a coupling member B so that the leading edge cuts into the outer surface of the pipe or is compressed into a groove in the surface, is characterised in that the ring is split axially at 5 and is of such circumference that, when contracted, the split ends 20, 21, adjacent to the leading edge are compressed together to form a seal, the area of contact between the ends depending on the contraction and the pressure between the contacting portions progressively decreasing from the leading edge towards the trailing edge of the ring. Fig. 1 shows an assembled coupling, Figs. 2, 5, the ring before and after coupling respectively. The ring may be made from strip material and may have its inner surface harder than the remainder of the ring. The inner cutting edge is harder than the material of the pipe.
