[Class 97 (i)] A correcting plate, particularly for use with a spherical mirror, has one surface A generally convex and formed by the rotation about the y axis of a curve of the form y = ax<2>+bx<4>+ ... , the tangent cone to such surface at the boundary D of the useful aperture of the plate having its vertex directed away from the non-figured surface B which is spherical and concave and has a radius less than eight times the diameter of the boundary D. Preferably, the vertical angle of the cone is greater than 170 degrees. Numerical data for two examples are given.
