Abstract

541,650. Optical systems. TAYLOR, TAYLOR & HOBSON, Ltd., and WARMISHAM, A. May 2, 1940, No. 7887. [Class 97 (i)] An objective comprise: two or more spherical reflecting surfaces in axial alignment, of which at least one is convergent and at least one divergent, and means for correcting spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism, such means including one or more substantially afocal correcting surfaces each intersecting the optical axis substantially at the centre of curvature of one of the spherical surfaces, or at the image of such centre formed by paraxial imagery by any intervening element, the whole combination being such as to produce an approximately flat field. As shown, the spherical reflecting surfaces R5, R6 have equal and opposite curvatures, and correction is effected by the surfaces R2, R4 of transmitting thin plates to produce a flat image field F. Modifications are described in which the correcting surfaces are both on one plate, or are reflecting surfaces, and in which the spherical surfaces are on opposite faces of a single piece of glass. Complete data for nine examples are set out. Specifications 541,651 and 541,652 are referred to.
