Abstract

541,651. Optical systems. TAYLOR, TAYLOR & HOBSON, Ltd., and WARMISHAM, A. May 2, 1940, No. 7890. [ Class 97 (i)] An objective comprises two or more spherical or spheroidal reflecting surfaces of which at least one is spheroidal, the generating curve of each spheroidal surface being, in polar co-ordinates, of the form r=r 0 +A#<SP>4</SP>-f-B#<SP>6</SP>+ ... higher powers of # where r 0 is the radius of curvature of the occulating sphere at the vertex and the coefficients AB ... are such that the deformation of such surface from the occulating sphere corrects, at least to the first order, for spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism of one or more of the other surfaces; the vertex of each spheroidal surface is disposed substantially at the centre of curvature of the surface to be corrected or at the image of such centre formed by paraxial imagery by intervening elements. Fig. 1 shows an anastigmatic photographic objective having spherical reflecting surfaces R2, R3, a spheroidal reflecting surface R1, and an afocal correcting reflecting surface R4. Modifications are described comprising two spheroidal and one spherical surfaces, and a symmetrical arrangement of four surfaces, two spherical and two spheroidal, and capable of use as an erector between the objective and eyepiece of a telescope. Complete data for six examples are set out. Specification 541,650 is referred to.
