Abstract

541,652. Optical systems. TAYLOR, TAYLOR & HOBSON, Ltd., and WARMISHAM, A. May 2, 1940, No. 7905. [Class 97 (i)] A reflecting system for use as an objective &c. comprises two or more axially aligned spherical reflecting surfaces having substantially coincident "equivalent centres of curvature ", i.e. the geometrical centres, or images thereof formed by paraxial imagery by any intervening elements, and means at or near such centre for simultaneously correcting for spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism of such surfaces. Fig. 1 shows spherical surfaces R3, R4 having a common centre of curvature A2 through which passes an afocal surface R2 of a thin correcting and transmitting plate having a plane surface R1. Modifications are described in which the order of the surfaces is changed, in which the spherical surfaces are on opposite faces of a single piece of glass, in which three spherical surfaces and a reflecting correcting surface are provided, and in which, for equal scale copying, a symmetrical arrangement of two systems is employed.
