Abstract

Keratin alkali metal sulphide solutions are stabilised by adjusting the pH to a value between 10.8 and 11.5 (measured by the glass electrode) such that the viscosity remains practically constant. The pH may be adjusted by adding acid or acid-forming material, e.g. carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen chloride, and acetyl chloride. An example describes the adjustment of the pH of samples of a sodium sulphide solution of hair to varying values, and refers to the results on viscosity. The viscosity may be raised by addition of methanal.
