607,012. Softening water. KRUGER AKTIESELSKAPET. Jan. 31, 1946, No. 3140. Convention date. Jan. 30, 1945. [Class 46] Apparatus for softening water on board ship comprises a container divided into four compartments, the upper compartment a serving as a mixing chamber for raw water supplied through a pipe e, and precipitating agents, for example sodium hydroxide and sodium orthophosphate, supplied together with return boiled water, through a pipe q. The mixing chamber is also provided with a pipe f for steam supply and with a vent pipe h. The treated liquid is fed by a pipe i to the lowermost compartment d which contains vertical plates o adapted to prevent splashing, The plates become coated with precipitated calcium carbonate which acts to promote further precipitation. The liquid from compartment d flows up through a filter of wood-shavings in a compartment c, and into a compartment b provided with an outlet k to the feed-water tank. The filter is cleansed by reverse flow of liquid when an outlet valve p has been opened. In a modification the compartment a serves as a heating chamber only, the channels being mixed with the liquid in the compartment d.
