Abstract

128,370. Smith, A. E. June 15, 1918. Mixing fluids in flow. - Apparatus for measuring and mixing liquids in predetermined proportions, specially applicable for use in softening and purifying water, comprises a chemical-reagent container A, separate tank or a tank divided into two compartments B, B<1> one of which receives the hard water and the other a measured quantity of the reagent, and a siphon E situated in the hard-water tank or compartment B for mixing the liquids and delivering them to a reaction chamber D. Two or more rows of pipes d, perforated on the underside and arranged at the bottom of the tank D, are connected to the discharge pipe e of the siphon. A valve e<2> to regulate the flow of reagent from the compartment B' is arranged at the inlet end of the suction pipe e<1>, which is connected to the dome of the siphon E. The measuring-valve C is operated by a float F in the compartment B', and stirrers G in the container A are driven by bevel-gearing g<1> from a spindle carrying a pinion g gearing with a rack f carried by the float. The reagent supplied to the compartment B' is made into a weak solution by water supplied by a pipe b from the compartment B. When the water in the compartment B has reached a certain height, the siphon delivers the water, together with solution from the compartment B', into the discharge pipe e. The softened water flows out through an outlet D<1>. Specification 128,814, [Class 106 (v), Measured quantities &c.], is referred to.
