[Class 86] An apparatus for proportioning the flow of liquids, such as in the addition of hypochlorite solution to water for sterilization purposes, comprises a tank 10 containing compounding liquid 11 on which floats an open top vessel 12, divided by an annular wall 13 into outer and inner chambers 14, 16, connected respectively by flexible pipes 15, 17 to a supply system and a delivery system. A small transfer passage 21 extends from the pipe 17 through the wall 13 into the chamber 14. An adjustable tube 18 threaded into the base 19 of the float has a head provided with an orifice 20. In operation, liquid from the supply pipe 15 flows into the chamber 14 and gradually depresses the float until the orifice 20 is below the level of the compounding liquid in the tank, when the compounding liquid commences to flow through the orifice 20 into the chamber 16. The float continues to descend until the supply liquid overflows the wall 13 in the manner of a weir and enters the chamber 16 to mix with the compounding liquid, the mixture flowing away through the pipe 17. When the supply is cut off, the float again rises, and the liquid in the chamber 14 drains away through the orifice 21. In a modified arrangement, the height of the orifice is fixed, and that of the weir adjustable with relation to the base of the float.
