Abstract

530,167. Measuring specific gravity of liquids. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DOMANIAL MIJN MAATSCHAPPIJ, and TROMP, K. F. June 5,1939, No. 16478. [Class 97 (iii)] Liquids having solids in suspension, for example water and sand, are fed by a pipe 15 into a fixed tank 14 having an overflow pipe 16 and a discharge pipe 17 depending to the middle of a vat 6 suspended from the beam 4 of weighing apparatus, the vat having an outlet 9 at the bottom and also an outlet 11 discharging through a spout 12 at the top into a fixed outer casing 13 with bottom outlet 13a. The end of pipe 17 is preferably fitted with a transverse baffle 18 to direct the liquid horizontally into the vat. The liquid may be maintained at constant specific gravity by supplying light and heavy mixtures respectively through pipes 24, 24a, Fig. 1, into divided chambers 21, 22 and 21a, 22a fixed to the tank 14, the compartments 21, 21a discharging into the tank 14 and the others into a pipe 23. The proportions flowing to the tank are determined by baffles 25, 25a opposite the inlet pipes and suspended from the balance beam so as to move with the vat. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 heavy liquid is supplied directly to the tank 14 by pipe 15, and water supplied by pipe 29 is diverted by a baffle 32 carried by the balance beam into the tank or to a waste pipe 27. The spout 72 of the upper outlet of the vat 6 discharges into a pipe 33 for use of the liquid when it is correct. When the liquid is incorrect the spout 12 discharges into the casing 13. The movement of the balance may be employed to actuate relays controlling liquid supply valves to maintain the specific gravity constant. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with the apparatus set forth in Specification 466,964, [Group II], for separating materials of different specific gravity.
