Abstract

934,426. Gravity separation apparatus. INSINOORITOIMISTO-ENGINEERING BUREAU R. T. HUKKI. Sept. 27, 1961 [Sept. 28, 1960], No. 34641/61. Class 46. A sedimentation element consists of an inclined box 1, open at the bottom only, Fig. 1, and provided with a siphon 6, Fig. 2, for simultaneously effecting upward laminar flow, and discharge of clarified liquid. Suspension delivered to a feed-box 19, Fig. 4, overflows at 20 into a tank 17 in which is immersed a set of sedimentation elements 16, each with its own siphon. The normal liquid level is 21, but an emergency overflow launder 22 may be provided. Each siphon may have a transparent inspection pipe 7, Fig. 2, a valve 8 for applying vacuum initially, and a discharge valve 9. The sedimentation element may have a plate 2 dividing inlet from solids discharge, it may be vibrated (or there may be vibrators on the outside of tank 17, Fig. 4), and the element may be provided with one or more pairs of electrodes, or one or both of its inclined surfaces may act as electrodes, for migration of colloids. A tank with sedimentation elements (such as 17) may receive the dilute discharge from a hydrocyclone, to which the original suspension has been supplied by a pump.
