Abstract
<PICT:0786639/III/1> <PICT:0786639/III/2> A suspension of sand &c. in water is fed to a static cone, for concentration of the suspension, through a de-airing tank 1 having a bottom tank outlet 6 controlled by a valve 11 suspended from a float 7, the plan area of which at its normal level is such that the float sinks to close the valve when the air content of the suspension is greater than a predetermined amount, the inlets 4 for the suspension being horizontal and terminating below the level of the float. The valve 11 is conical and has its apex downwards to co-operate with an interchangeable plate which forms the outlet 6. The inlet pipes run horizontally for some distance before entering the tank to give air bubbles time to rise. The de-airing tank 1 is mounted above a static cone 12 from which the concentrated suspension is removed by a pump 15, the intake pipe of which dips nearly to the bottom of the cone. The suspension treated in the static cone is fed to classifying apparatus such as that described in Specification 779,013, [Group II], and the waste therefrom fed back to the de-airing tank.
