Abstract

780,931. Centrifugal separators. NICHOLS ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1956 [March 10, 1955], No. 1306/56. Classes 23 and 82(2) Apparatus for separating impurities from liquids, liquid mixtures, or suspensions such as paper pulp comprises a vortex chamber 13 having a generally conical part 14 leading to a chamber 15 having a surface 39 transverse to the axis of the vortex and below an annular outlet 41 for discharge of the impurities. The surface is conical and has a conical depression 40. Auxiliary liquid may be supplied tangential to the chamber 15 through an inlet 31, and the impurities are removed from the chamber through tangential outlet 42. The wall of the chamber 15 is transparent. In the plant shown in Fig. 10 separators C, without provision for supply of auxilary liquid, are arranged in parallel and discharge into a chamber 58, liquid from the chamber being treated in a separator D having provision for supply of auxilary liquid. The overflow from the separator D is returned to the separators C. Each of the separators C discharges impurities through an orifice 64 and a sight glass 68, a plug 66 being provided to facilitate cleaning of the orifice. Water is added to the supply to the separator C when the level in the chamber 58 falls below a certain level, th water supply being controlled by a valve 62 coupled to a float in the chamber. In a modified plant (Fig. 9, not shown) separators according to Specification 768,537 are arranged in parallel and discharge into a vacuum chamber, liquid from the vacuum chamber being treated in a separator according to the invention and having provision for supply of auxilary liquid. Dimensions of, and performance figures for the apparatus are given in the Specification.
