Abstract
443,837. Separating coal and shale. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and WOOD, H. L., Fraser & Chalmers Engineering Works, Erith, Kent. Aug. 1, 1934, No. 22456. [Class 82 (ii)] Fine particles of coal are separated from fine particles of shale by introducing the mixture into water which is agitated, for example by an upward current of water, so that some of the fine shale particles are maintained in suspension and form a fluid mass on which the coal floats, the agitation being insufficient to carry the small particles of shale away with the floated coal. The separation may be carried out in a tank 1 provided with a feed launder 2, a discharge weir 3, and a refuse outlet 4. The water in the tank is agitated by an upward flow produced by downwardly directed jets of water issuing from horizontal pipes 11 located beneath a sloping screen 10 forming the bottom of the tank. The pipes are arranged in a box 14 which is packed with gravel and provided with partitions 15 separating the pipes. The water supply to each pipe is independently controlled. The height of the weir 3 and the size of the refuse opening 4, which leads to a refuse extractor 17, can be adjusted by sliding plates 6 and 8 respectively. The velocity of the upward current is adjusted so that the small shale particles form a fluid mass extending up to just below the weir 3 ; the coal floats on this fluid mass and passes over the weir. The height of the fluid mass is controlled by varying the upward current and by varying the rate at which shale is removed through the outlet 4. The material treated may be fine material separated from coal prior to treatment by the sand-flotation process, the washed fine coal obtained being mixed with the coarser coal separated by sand-flotation. The Provisional Specification states that ores and like materials may also be treated. Specifications 119,038, [Class 82 (ii)], and 403,150 are referred to.
