[Class 82(ii)] An apparatus for separating solids of varying specific gravity by means of a liquid comprises a chamber having an inlet at the top, peripherally extending ports for the introduction of separating liquid and discharge outlets respectively located one above and the others below the level of liquid inlet to produce upwards and downwards flow of the separating liquid to effect separation of the solids which discharge through the outlets, means being provided to remove heavy particles from the bottom of the chamber. As shown applied to the separation of beet tailings from grass and stones, the mixture is fed centrally into the top of a cylindrical chamber 1 where in a supply of separating liquid from supply ports 2 carries the grass over the edge 3 of the chamber, the stones falling to the bottom to be removed through a trap 16 and the pieces of beet carried through a pipe 4 and discharged over an adjustable weir 14 into a launder 13. The speed of the liquid flowing through the pipe 4 should not be sufficient to remove any stones. The supply ports 2 may be fed from an annular chamber 6 having four inlets from a liquid supply situated below the level of the inlet ports 2. A series of chambers may be provided one above the other as illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown), the light material being removed at the top, the heavy material at the bottom and an intermediate fraction taken from each chamber. The Provisional Specification states that an adjustable sleeve may be fitted at the bottom of the intermediate discharge pipe within the chamber to vary the distance from the pipe to the sloping sides of the chamber and to set up some turbulence in the bottom of the chamber. It also includes the use of liquids other than water and refers to the grading of coal, gravel, seaweed and other vegetables.
