Abstract

1,102,700. Separating solids from liquid. J. LABOUYGUES. 20 July, 1966 [14 Dec., 1965]. No. 32669/66. Heading B1D. A mixture of solids (e.g. coal, sand, ores) and water enters vat 1 by inlet 4, pure liquid is delivered by conduit 6 and concentrated slurry removed through valve 2, the flows being adjusted so that a zone exists on the level of baffle 8 in which there is little or no net vertical flow of liquid so that solids sink through and are washed by pure liquid to reach valve 2, while liquid overflows between vat 1 and cover 3. The slurry is directed from valve 2 on to a rotating screen 9 whose integral funnel 13 extends below liquid 15, and suction is applied by air pump 19 to draw air and liquid through the material on the screen. The liquid part then overflows at 17. A scraper 20 is spaced from screen 9 to maintain a filtering layer of separated solids thereon, superfluous solids being directed to channel 21, and the layer is mixed up by water spray or rubber rake (22) (Fig. 2, not shown). The scraper 20 may be adjustable or continuously varied in distance from the screen, and its spacing may vary radially to form the solids layer into a liquid-containing dished form.
