800,487. Cleaning coal by agglomeration. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1956 [Aug. 6, 1956], No. 38464/56. Class 82(2) A method of cleaning fine coal mixed with clay in a water slurry comprises passing the slurry through a phaseinversion mill 11 in which it is mixed with a small amount of hydrocarbon oil, stirring the mixture slowly in a conditioning tank 13 to cause the particles to cling together, passing it over a sloping vibrating screen 14 whilst washing from sprays 15 and passing the coal remaining through a centrifugal solid-bowl separator 16 for dewatering. The slurry is initially delivered from a thickener 10. Preferably 5 per cent of kerosene is added to the slurry from a tank 12.
