Abstract

420,367. Concentrating coal. VOOYS, G. J. DE, Huckelhoven, Erkelenz, Germany. May 24, 1933, Nos. 15040 and 15041. Convention dates, June 4, 1932 and Sept. 26, 1932. [Class 82 (ii)] Coal is concentrated by a gravity separation process carried out in an aqueous sludge of barytes and clay, the proportions being selected to produce a separating liquid of the desired specific gravity. A slight upward current is preferably produced in the upper part of the concentration vessel and a slight downward current in the lower part of the vessel. Coal is fed by a shoot 2 to a vessel 1 containing an aqueous sludge of barytes and clay, and is uniformly distributed in the bath by the drum 4<1>. The lower end of the vessel 1 is connected to a housing in which works a bucket conveyer 9 which removes the gangue. Liquid is withdrawn from the conveyer housing through a pipe 14 connected to a pump 18 which also withdraws liquid through a pipe 17 from an extension 16 at the top of the vessel 1. The amount of liquid withdrawn can be controlled by valves 12 and the liquid is returned by the pump 18 to the vessel 1 by means of a pipe 19, an annular conduit 20, and openings 21. The circulation is adjusted so that a slight upward current is produced in the vessel 1 above the openings 21 and a stronger downward current below these openings. The floating coal is removed by an endless rake conveyer 5 which carries the coal up a perforated deck 22 from which the liquid drains back into the extension 16, the coal being discharged into a hopper 6. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the apparatus which forms the subject-matter of Specification 420,427. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
