528,590. Washing coal. DIRECTIE VAN DE STAATSMIJNEN IN LIMBURG. May 9, 1939, No. 13897. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1938. [Class 82 (ii)] In the separation or thickening of suspensions in coal washing plants, particularly those using heavy liquids, use is made of a cyclone having a cover plate and an opening in the latter for the clarified fraction, whereby the suspension is separated into two fractions of controllable concentration. Coal and rock are separated in a tank 1 containing a loess suspension and are led by a scraper 2 and conveyer 4 respectively to sieves 3, 5 to which water is supplied by a cistern 12 ; diluted suspension from the sieves 3, 5, passes through a vibrating sieve 6, which removes coarse particles, to a tank 7 and is then forced by a pump 8 to cyclones 9 from which thickened suspension passes by a tank 10 to the tank 1, and clarified water passes to the tank 12 or by an overflow to cyclones 11 from which the heavier fraction passes to tank 7 and water passes to outlet c. The concentration of the two fractions may be controlled by suitable choice of the diameters of the outlet openings or adjusting the supply pressure or both ; further foam flotation methods may be applied in the cyclones. The process may be applied to the preparation of suspensions from normally unsuitable material such as a mixture of sand and clay. Specifications 455,845, 507,412 and 514,515 are referred to.
