Abstract

In a process for separating materials according to specific gravity, the separation is effected in a suspension which is formed from one of the materials to be separated. The material to be separated is first divided into at least two fractions according to size, and in the embodiment described there are two such fractions, one (the fine fraction), containing particles up to 1 m.m.; and the other (the coarse fraction) containing particles 1-8 m.m. in diameter. Coal and shale are to be separated using a magnetic suspension. The coarse fraction obtained from the separation is mixed with the suspension and separated, in a cyclone, into coarse shales and coarse coal, each of which is screened separately on a 1 m.m. screen and rinsed with clarified water from the fine fraction thickeners. This rinsing water carrying the suspension from the shale and coal is recirculated to the mixing step. The coal is also rinsed, whilst on its screen, with clean water and the diluted suspension thus obtained is in part fed to the mixing stage of each fraction. In the fine fraction plant a similar mixing with suspension takes place, then a separation according to specific gravity into coal and shale is accomplished in a cyclone. Each of these fractions is treated by separate magnetic separators to remove the magnetite suspension which is recirculated after demagnetization. The remaining flows from the magnetic separators are thickened and coal recovered as slimes. The clarified water from both thickeners is supplied to the screen sprays. Specification 655,957, is referred to.
