Abstract

The invention is concerned with a separation of the kind in which solid particles are separated by the aid of a separating suspension, the separated fractions being passed over draining screens and then rinsed on rinsing screens, the through-put of the rinsing screens being cleaned of particles derived from the mixture to be separated; and in which a separating suspension with a specific gravity higher than that required in the specific gravity separator is formed for recycling to the separator by steps comprising thickening the through-put of the rinsing screens, which has been cleaned as above-mentioned, and then adding a part of the through-put of the draining screens. In the method according to the invention a part of the through-put of the draining screens is, as previously stated, added to the thickened through-put of the rinsing screens, and another part of the through-put of the draining screens is added to the dilute cleaned through-put of the rinsing screens, to contribute to the formation of thickened suspension for recycling. A number of hydrocyclones in parallel is used for the separating process and the separating suspension comprises magnetite. The magnetite suspension is drained off the fractions on screens and the remaining medium is washed-off the fractions. The washed-off material from both fractions is combined and then passed for further treatment into a hydrocyclone the apex discharge having magnetic particles removed by magnetic separators, the base discharge being returned to the thickener. Part of the drainings is also returned to the thickener and part added to the resulting thickened medium. A magnetite grinding circuit is provided for make-up purposes.
